Law and Religion

Bangladesh society is deeply conservative. Since we are a Muslim majority country, demands are often made for the application and implementation of religious laws in Bangladesh. But to what extent is it possible to inculcate religious values in the country’s existing legal structure?

We examine the following issues as part of our research:

  • Can an economic system be developed which reflects the values underpinning religious scriptures bearing in mind the socio-economic, cultural and political realities of Bangladesh.
  • Should Personal Laws be tested against the principle of equality or should they be defended as being necessary for a pluralistic society.
  • Are the demands for a Uniform Family Code valid and legitimate?
  • To what extent are religious laws relating to criminal justice applicable in today’s Muslim majority democracies such as Bangladesh.
